We are looking forward to starting our newest residency with local artist Chance Bellegarde on April 19th, 2022. Chance will be leading students in the creation of a mural throughout the Spring. The mural will be completed at school with a focus on community representation and that school is a wonderful place to be. We hope to respond to our Truth and Reconciliation Commitment from June 21, 2021 that we would create a visible representation of our reconciliation efforts at North Haven School. The mural will be completed and installed on the North fence along 48th Ave. on June 8th. Stay tuned! Canada, Alberta, Calgary, North Haven. By Emerson Dick 2021 April is when the school-wide project first started. Teachers and students decided to start a naturalization area at the School. The students were asked to draw a design of what they wanted in the naturalization area. Then they had to write persuasive paragraphs to go along with their drawings to tell how the design would enhance learning at North Haven School. Many students who entered and presented ideas. The school community voted on all of the designs. Many students voted for the interesting aspects of many designs. One design had the most votes. The student design was full of many great ideas. When asked the question what she liked from her plan and what she would change. She said “I would be most excited to see the tree house because it still follows the rules because it’s like a play structure and I would change the beehives and the pond because they are not really necessary and have no use.” This project brought the school community together and will give the students a chance to learn in a new environment and to learn outside of the classroom. This project has gone through many phases and is almost at the point for it to come to life. This plan started from talking about it, to a paper plan by students, then a meeting with the School Council to get a committed group of parents to help out. The students put together a proposal for a grant for flowers for the front flower bed in the front of the school. In June the students used the grant money to enhance the flower bed and soil. After this they did projects about specific things they wanted in the naturalized area. The teachers have done so much work and research for this project. Further on, the parents wrote many grants and hired a landscape designer to raise funds for the project. They also got the school community to vote for the Field Law Grant. They won the grant of $15,000. Now, in February a new teacher has been introduced to this idea of a naturalization area. Grade 5/6 teacher Ms. Poitras said “I think it is a great opportunity for the students to collaborate and put their ideas into action”.
The students, parents, and teachers have been working hard to make this design come true. With all their work from April 2021 - February 2022 is outstanding. The students and community can’t wait to see this hard work pay off. The students and staff at North Haven school and the parent association have all been busy looking ahead at the designs and plans for the Learning Grounds project!
We are pleased to announce that the conceptual design for the project has been drafted by reGenerate Design, and is posted on the NHPA website at https://northhavenparentassociation.weebly.com. We are in the process of finalizing the design and getting appropriate approvals in place. Want to support the Learning Grounds? Make a donation on the project website! Updates on the project will be posted on the Parent Association Facebook page, school social media, the North Haven Community website, and in future newsletters. Principal’s Message The North Haven School Learning Grounds is a schoolyard naturalization project located at the heart of our community. The school initiated this project to inspire our students and families to appreciate our natural region of Canada, respect the indigenous peoples of this territory and maintain a healthy active lifestyle. As teachers, we have studied and experienced the fact that spending time in nature helps with recall and memory, problem solving, and creativity. Children (and adults) who spend more time outside are also physically and emotionally healthier. We know that children learn best by experiencing and doing, and that spending time outside is the best way to begin to foster children’s relationship with nature. We want our community members to have a space to learn about how their daily actions impact their natural environment and their personal health. Our goal is to teach in a natural environment so that students and their families will feel compelled to protect what they will come to understand and feel connected to, and to be active on a regular basis. Our North Haven Learning Grounds Committee, the staff, and our students know that it is important to take collective action when tackling our most pressing environmental and personal health challenges. We have had tremendous support from community parents. A small group has joined together to raise funds and awareness. We’d like to thank them and all North Haven Community members for working together to make North Haven a great place to live and learn. Joining together to achieve a common goal can be a powerful force for change. We look forward to continued work on this project, which has inspired a strong sense of community.
